Simon Schama's Power of Art.

The Author, Simon Schama, studied history at Cambridge University and he is currently professor of history and art history at Columbia University, New York, USA.

A knowledgeable and popular TV Historian. This book explores the power and the point of art. It concentrates on the artists: Caravaggio, Bernini, Rembrandt, David, Turner, Van Gogh, Picasso and Rothko and tells the story of their lives and delves into why they created such great masterpieces.

A revealing and cleverly written book and one that urges you to find the actual paintings Schama talks about and to look for yourself . This book makes art meaningful and is a must for every student; philosopher; artist; housewife; granny; well everyone with an ounce of soul!

REVIEWS FROM OUR READERS

I read it - it's an excellent book. I thought it would be stuffy but the author kind of grips you and you want to keep reading. It's easy to understand and it really does give you an insight into art and knowing about the painter's lives makes it seem real and special. Puts art into perspective and if anyone asks you what is the point of art - you can tell them after you've read this book. Great - loved it. Penny Williams, Bath
