COMPOSITION
Have you heard of the 'Golden Section'? or 'Golden Mean'
It's complicated but if you just take the essentials from it and break your canvas down into 9 equal sections - you can work out the perfect 'harmony' of space.

'Harmony is the key word. 'Harmony is what most buyers are looking for and 'Harmony' is what most artists are seeking. (just think about all the famous and successful artists - aren't all their paintings harmonious?)
Fibonacci was one of the mathmeticians in the 18th century who established the golden section.
It's all about ensuring you do not have a horizon line in the middle of the painting but near the top third or the bottom third. And composition that fills your harmonious sections.

FOCAL POINT
Your focal point is the 'starting point' for any viewer of the painting. This is the entry point into your painting - the rest of the painting contributes to the focal point.
Your 'Focal Point' should be slightly different in colour or form or thicker in texture - something to identify it as the place you want people to start viewing your painting. Carefully composed the focal point will take round the rest of the painting.
TONAL VALUES
Tonal values are the light, medium and dark shades of every colour. Tonal values give you light and shade and are essential to painting.
Ideally you will go on location to create your painting. You will draw it in only CHARCOAL - to establish the tonal values, your dark areas, medium dark areas, medium light areas, light ares etc.
Then work from your working drawing to create your colour painting.
