CANVAS

All Professional Artists make their own canvas.

It's easy but fiddly and time consuming.

You will need

1. Stretchers (we use professional stretchers with a 'lip'

2. Painting canvas (we use heavyweight pure cotton canvas or linen)

START

Get FOUR Stretchers. Make sure TWO are the same size. i.e two stretchers size 80cm and two stretchers size 100cm for exmple. Make sure the 'lip' of each stretcher is facing the same way. OUTWARDS (The 'lip' holds the canvas away from the wood).

You can get great stretchers from Lion Picture Framers

JOIN

With a wooden mallet join the specially cut joints together. They push together very nicely.

Bang together with a wood mallet over a cloth so as not to dent wood.

Join all four stretchers.

Use a T square to make sure your joins are perfect.

Making sure there is enough canvas to fold over the sides of the stretchers

MEASURE

Measure exact distance from side of canvas to stretcher = make sure this is equal all the way round

STRETCH CANVAS

START IN THE MIDDLE OF ONE SIDE

Use stretcher implement to stretch canvas over stretcher

STAPLE with staple gun (on the BACK of the stretcher) No-one fixes canvas to sides of stretchers anymore = well they might but it's an 'old fashioned' way of doing it!!

DO THE SAME AROUND ALL EDGES. STRETCH as hard as you can.

CORNERS

Fold corners (like a nurses bed corner) = staple

PERFECT!

A perfect canvas which you should be able to play 'like a drum'!

TIME = around 30 minutes for a 100x100cm canvas

NOW PLACE 4 LAYERS OF GESSO ON CANVAS AND SAND DOWN BETWEEN EACH LAYER (WHEN DRY)
